Car is home. Lets have a look.

Car coming home

Flared fenders with CCW's and Brembos

RUF glass bumper

I'm going to need some tail lights

Needs some cleaning

Complete with banjo bolts

Distributor looks in good shape.  Plunger slides nicely

Need a new air mix boot

Side view

Another view

Inside the fuel tank.  A little more rust then I want to handle

Another view of the fuel tank.  I'm hoping this is worth something to someone else.

Look, an oil line!  Tensioners were upgraded.

So where do you think these speaker boxes go?

I guess under the dash.  They use up precious footwell space.

The car

The car is a 1978 911 SC.  It started off its life in cashmere beige and is now white gold metallic.  The front and rear fenders have been flared giving it the turbo look.  The work was done in steel and it looks good.  However I can see some weld marks and maybe some loose filler under the paint.  You can only see it close up.  It won't be a concern until I want to repaint the car.
The front and rear bumpers are fiberglass and currently shod in primer grey.  I'm thinking I'll have them sprayed when I put the car on the road. It should look ok for a while.
Other notibles on the outside are the 930 mirrors, the h4 headlights and the wheels and brakes.  The PO spared no expense on a set of beautiful three piece CCW wheels in front of Brembo brakes.  The wheels are even color matched to the white gold body.
The body still needs plenty of work.  It needs a full weatherstripping replacement and is missing the rear tail lights.  It's also missing the torsion spring access covers.
Now on to the interior.  The PO had the dash and seats 're-upholstered in a light beige. However, the seats were left in the car stacked over several years. They got dirty, wet and moldy. I don't know if they can be salvaged, but I will give it a shot.
The rest of the interior is stripped bare. So it needs door panels, rear seat side panels, rear deck and full carpet.  The dash is missing some parts too.  Lots of work needed.
Now onto the engine.  The fuel injectors and fuel distributor were out of the car.  A few other parts were missing too or in boxes.  I still have to inventory everything.  The engine is pretty dirty.  It looks like it has thirtysometing years of grime.  Oh, and this car has a/c.  That will one of the last systems to fix.  Or I may just pull it out.
So that's the car right now. I will be going though it and put together a plan to get it on the road.   Later!

Intro

Welcome to Projekt 911. This blog documents my 911SC restoration.
A bit of history first.
I've loved the 911 since I was a little kid.  I grew up in the 70's & 80's so I was fortunate to see the evolution of this fantastic automobile.  I just loved the looks and the roar from that sweet air cooled flat 6.  Here is a car whose styling never grows old and even as a kid I knew it was something special.
My love for the car endured even as I got older.  In college I had one of those 6ft long posters of a red 930 on my wall.

Over the years I worked and went to school.  I got married and had kids.  Too many responsibilities. and too little time.  I keep myself amused with a Corrado but I lost it a few years ago in a collision with a payloader of all things.
So the 911 is still on my bucket list.  I have an empty bay in the garage.  The kids are getting a little older and I have a bit more free time.  Its time to get a 911.

I began looking around. Of course I was first looking at ads for 930's.  Why not go for the best, right? Well holy crap these cars have gotten expensive!  I'm seeing nice examples for no less then $80k.  I've got college to pay for so on to plan B. Nuts.
My first 911 is going to be something more reasonable.  So I drop the turbo and start looking at 911's. The ones I'm most interested are the 3.0 liter and later models.  I think a mid to late 80's car would be nice.
A couple of years ago I noticed a 911 sitting in a local auto repair lot.  Good looking car from the road.  White gold, but with unfinished bumpers.  Fenders look flared... sweet.  I see this car on and off for the next year.  Its always in the same condition and its definitely not being driven since its got no plates.  Finally I decide to find out what the story is with this car.  I stop in and start talking to the shop owner.  Turns out this car is his friend's project.  He's put some work into the car but has other priorities now.  I know hot that is.  So I ask if he's looking to sell it and he says sure but he's looking to get back the money he's put into the car.  I check the car out a little closer now.
From the outside the car is pretty.  Its a diamond in the rough.  Real rough.  But its got some awesome upgrades.  The fenders are flared (steel).  I bend down and see its been outfitted with 4 piston Brembos and CCW wheels.  The front and rear bumpers are fiberglass.  I'm pretty sure the front is a RUF replica bumper.
Then I take a look inside.  Oh boy.  So there's lots of work needed there.  The interior had been stripped and the seats and dash had been reupholstered in leather.  Unfortunately, everything was allowed to sit in the car for years? Allowed to get wet since some of the seals are not in place.  The leather looks trashed.  What a shame.
Now onto the engine  I pop the lid and have a look.  A few things are missing, like half the CIS system.  I look underneath and the engine is dirty and grimy, but no massive oil leaks are evident.  The heat exchanges are a little loose, but they look to be intact.  The car is sporting a new SS dual exhaust muffler.
Up front, there not much under the hood.  In fact the gas tank is missing.  Whoa.  Whats up with that?
So I talk the the shop owner.  He tells me they were working the fuel system.  The tank is dirty because it was left with fuel in it for a long time.  They pulled the fuel distributor and injectors and put in a new fuel filter.  The tank needed to be boiled out and the injectors cleaned.  Sounded like a good story to me.
So I hemmed and hawed and decided the price was too high and I wasn't ready to take on this challenge.  I didn't even bother to make an offer.
I watched this car sit there for almost a whole year.  It would get moved around from spot to spot, and sometimes I wouldn't see it for a month or two.  I'd start wondering if it was sold, only to see it reappear again.
I started to search ebay and craigslist for 911's again. Every time not finding what I wanted.  Or at least what I thought I wanted.  Then I stopped back in to see the white gold 911.  The shop owner remembered me.  He said the owner dropped his price, but it was still more then I wanted to pay.  This time, I made an offer and over the next week or so we came to an agreement.  I'm getting  my first 911.
